Mount Cathedral
The Highest point in Uruguay is Mount Cathedral, also known as Cerro Cordillera. Mount Cathedral’s peak reaches up to about 1,685 feet above sea level. Mount Cathedral experiences strong winds and fog constantly due to its height. Due to Uruguay’s relative flatness, Mount Cathedral is the lowest country highpoint in South America. Some trees that are found on mount cathedral are eucalyptus, pine, poplar, acacia, willow, and alder. Shrubs and smaller plants that are also found include Mimosa, myrtle, rosemary, scarlet-flowered ceibo. The birds that live near mount cathedral are parakeets, waterfowl, including white herons, cranes, and flamingos, burrowing owls, crows, lapwings, partridges, quails, hummingbirds, and cardinals. Mammals like armadillos, foxes, deer, wildcats, and capybaras are also found on the summit. There are also reptiles found in this area of Uruguay including lizards, tortoises, venomous snakes, and caimans. Mount Cathedral is also known for its amazing star gazing due to its stunningly clear night sky. Overall, although Mount Cathedral is not the tallest of summits, it is a quite diverse stretch of land in Uruguay, varying from pine trees to the world's largest rodent, the Capybara.
